International Women's Day 2025

Saturday 8th of March represents International Women’s Day. A day to promote gender equality and celebrate the social, economic, cultural, and political achievements of women.

For this year's International Women's Day, the focus is giving to charities that make a difference to the lives of women in need. Spires is officially listed on the International Women’s Day Giving Directory, where people can nominate and donate to our cause, helping us continue our work and supporting our mission of aiding women. We feature on their directory through the link below and you can make your contributions via our website.

Spires’ dedicated women’s service focuses on supporting women by addressing housing, health, safety and well-being concerns. We aim to create a positive and welcoming environment where women from all backgrounds in our local communities can feel safe and included. We run a weekly drop-in service from our Stockwell location, in partnership with Refuge Charity. We support women at risk of homelessness, violence and other social injustice. The sessions are always well attended.

In 2024, Spires provided support to 175 women who attended these sessions.

  • 80% agreed “I feel my quality of life is improved as a result of the support I have received”

  • 83% agreed “I feel less isolated as a result of the support I have received”

“I have utilised the services at Spires for over two years. I have in this time built up an almost family relationship with the staff. Their help and advice is commendable and has improved my situation significantly in the past year.”

Case Study:

Spires had a visit from a lady who was 6 months pregnant. She told us that her husband had abandoned her and that she had to stop work due to her pregnancy. She had to leave her flat and was street homeless for 3 days before coming to Spires. We gave her an emergency food parcel and toiletries and advised her to go to the council and apply for temporary accommodation. Her Spires support worker helped her prepare documents that she could present to the council. She was moved into temporary accommodation that day. Thanks to the immediate guidance and support from Spires, she was in a much safer situation.
